CLR James and the Haitian Revolution
October 7 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
A lecture on the colonial slave revolt that led to the independence of Haiti on the 1st January 1804, as well as the events’ most famous historian Trinidadian Marxist CLR James.
The Haitian Revolution unfolded at a critical time in the political formation of the modern world. As the French Revolution gave teeth to concepts like liberalism, democracy, and socialism, this less remembered revolution among one of the most viciously exploited populations in the world at the time questioned how far these ideas would be extended.
This lecture will be held in the Seminar Room on the third floor of the library, and following it we will retire to a cafe or pub for a drink.
